Temple of God Verses the Temple

Scripture references are from Modern King James (MKJV) unless noted otherwise.

AIM

I hope to show you from scripture, an alternative way to interpret this famous passage; 2Th 2:4 “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself forth, that he is God.”

REASON

The apostle Paul wrote that in about 50 AD, and it gives us insight into what the antichrist will achieve during his reign. The point being is, that was written long ago, and after nearly 2000 years one would think this prophecy should have been fulfilled by now. Most people think that the Temple at Jerusalem has to be rebuilt before the antichrist can, “sits as God in the temple of God” BUT what if there is a different meaning to the word temple?

CONCEDER

Have you ever noticed that a lot of church congregations meet in a building that the church hires, such as a school hall or a council building etc? If you, in your little church meet in a hall or such, then why do you call it “church?” Example, “I’ll meet you at church on Sunday". It is not a registered church building, so why do you call it a church? It is because the term church is used in reference to the congregation of people, the assembly of the body, i.e. the ‘body of Christ'.

But you can also have an ancient deserted stone build, which is still referred to as a “church”. I saw dozens of them in 1980 when touring the UK and Europe. So why is it still called a church? No worship meetings have been held there for centuries! The reason is we identify a building for its specific purpose. For example, you could go to an old deserted town, a ‘ghost town’, and identifier the buildings as; railway-station, school, store, blacksmith, shearing shed and a church etc. It is the same with the Greek words for temple. There are basically two different words used as temple. Word Number G3485 and Word Number G2411.

There is one exception, (word number temple: G3624), it is in Luke 11:51 “from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the templeG3624. Truly I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.” It is normally translated to mean, ‘house’. But in this particular verse, if yo do “compare” in e-Sword, (which shows you that one verse from every version of the bible you have downloaded). You will find that the various translations skip between, sanctuary, house or temple. But that’s just the odd one that is used that way.

Temple OR Temple
Let’s now examine the meaning of the two very different words.

Word Number G3485
Thayer Definition: G3485 ναός naos
1) used of the temple at Jerusalem, but only of the sacred edifice; 2) any heathen temple or shrine3) metaphorically the spiritual temple consisting of the saints of all ages joined together by and in Christ
Part of Speech: noun masculine; A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from a primary naio (to dwell)
Or
Strong G3485 ναός naos nah-os'
From a primary word ναίω naiō (to dwell); a fane, shrine, temple: - shrine, temple. Compare G2411.
Total KJV occurrences: 46

Word Number G2411
Thayer Definition: G2411 ἱερόν hieron1) a sacred place, temple;
1a) used of the temple of Artemis at Ephesus; 1b) used of the temple at Jerusalem Part of Speech: noun neuter; A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G2413
Or
Strong G2411 ἱερόν hieron hee-er-on'
Neuter of G2413; a sacred place, that is, the entire precincts (whereas G3485 denotes the central sanctuary itself) of the Temple (at Jerusalem or elsewhere): - temple.
Total KJV occurrences: 71

Example Of The Two Different Words

Try this for example; do a search in your bible using these three words. “Three, days, temple”. You should get a short list of seven verses. Six of them are “Matt 26:61, Matt 27:40, Mark 14:58, Mark 15:29, John 2:19, and John 2:20”. And I have given you the word number to compare them. Those six are referring to this occasion in, John 2:19 “Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this templeG3485 and in three days I will raise it up.” Then in Luke you will find this different word number? Luke 2:46 “And it happened that after three days they found Him in the temple,G2411 sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them and questioning them.”

So why the difference, it is the same building isn’t it? In those six verses they are talking about the temple, “G3485 the central sanctuary itself!” But we also know that Jesus was referring to Himself as the templeG3485, THE living body of the believers. Whereas in Luke chapter 2, Jesus was 12 and was sitting with the teachers having a Q&A time with them. So I very much doughty that He would have been in the “central sanctuary itself”, but perhaps in the outer court, which would still be referred to as the, temple,G2411, as many other verses that I will show you would verify.

What Word Does Paul Use?

If the apostle Paul was writing a memo to someone as in the example above, "meet you at church on Sunday" etc, he would most likely use the Greek word 'templeG3485', because he would be speaking of the spiritual body of the assembly of the saints. For example look at these verses that Paul wrote to the various churches, and I have reduced them to one line for you: -

1Co 3:16 “Do you not know that you are a templeG3485 of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"
1Co 3:17 “If anyone defiles the templeG3485 ..God shall destroy him. ..the templeG3485 of God is holy, which you are.”
1Co 6:19 “Or do you not know that your body is a templeG3485 of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have of God?.."
2Co 6:16 “what agreement does a templeG3485 of God have with idols? ..you are the templeG3485 of the living God.."
Eph 2:21 [KJV] “In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy templeG3485 in the Lord:"
And this FAMOUS one: -
2Th 2:4 “who opposes and exalts himself ..so that he sits as God in the templeG3485 of God, setting himself forth, that he is God.”

But Paul also uses the word, ‘templeG2411’, but it is obvious he is only referring to the physical building. For example: -

Act 24:12 “..they neither found me in the temple,G2411 disputing ...nor making a gathering ..even in the synagogues,..”
Act 24:18 “...certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple,G2411, not with a crowd nor with tumult.”
Act 25:8 “..Paul said, Neither against the Law of the Jews, nor ..the temple,G2411, nor ..Caesar have I offended ..”
Act 26:21 “Because of these things, having caught me in the temple,G2411, The Jews tried to kill me.”
1Co 9:13 “..who minister ..holy things live of ..things of the temple,G2411?..those attending ...partakers with the altar.”

Scriptures Using The Word TempleG3485 or TempleG2411

This is rather a boring section and I don’t expect you to read through every verse. But I have put it all together for you, so that if you have any particular verses you are interested in, you should be able to find it at a glance in this listing. But don’t take my word for it; by all means check it out for yourself with a concordance or via e-Sword.

Scriptures Using The Word TempleG3485

What I have dune for you is a search in e-Sword, using the ‘KJV+’ version, (i.e. with the Strong Numbers), looking for all the passages containing the word number “G3485”. Remember this word is used to denote the physical temple building. I did the same as above, I searched in e-Sword, using the ‘KJV+’ version, (i.e. with the Strong Numbers), looking for all the passages containing the word number “G2411”. Then as above I copied the MKJV version of the verse, then pasted in the expression, ‘templeG2411,’ into the MKJV verse.

BIG Difference!!

Have you noticed the big difference? The word; templeG2411 does not appear anywhere in the Revelation! Why? Because all the references to the temple in the Revelation are speaking of the spiritual aspect, and the holy aspect of the temple in heaven. It is not just bricks and mortar in heaven, it is absolute holiness, and hence it is described by the word, templeG3485! From Thayer Definition above “metaphorically the spiritual temple consisting of the saints of all ages joined together by and in Christ”. As I said above nor does Paul use the word; templeG2411, in any way when he is describing the church, (the body of Christ), as a ‘spiritual’ entity.

Sits As God In The TempleG3485 Of God

And you guessed it, yes Paul wrote this verse in 2 Thessalonians 2:4 and he is speaking of the antichrist. Let's look at that whole passage in context. This is the second letter Paul has sent the Thessalonians, to try to reassure them that Christ’s return is not just around the corner, but there are other things that must be fulfilled beforehand. One of which is the antichrist must yet appear before Christ returns.

2Th 2:1 “Now we beseech you, my brothers, with regard to the comingG3952 of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, :2 that you should not be soon shaken in mind or troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word or letter, as through us, as if the Day of Christ is at hand. :3 Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day shall not come unless there first comes a falling away, and the man of sin shall be revealed, the son of perdition, :4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the templeG3485 of God, setting himself forth, that he is God. :5 Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? :6 And now you know what holds back, for him to be revealed in his own time. :7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already working, only he is now holding back until it comes out of the midst. :8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the breath of His mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming"

Unpack The Verses

Now there is a lot that we can unpack from this passage. One key bit is the ‘Time-Mark’ and it’s in the first verse; “the comingG3952 of our Lord Jesus Christ”. Why is it a time-mark? Well the word comingG3952 is the word Parousia. [From STRONG; Parousia; par-oo-see'-ah; “From the present participle of G3918; a being near, that is, advent (often, return; specifically of Christ to punish Jerusalem, or finally the wicked); (by implication) physical aspect: - coming, presence.”]. Paul uses this same word in these verses, 1Co 16:17, 2Co 7:6, 2Co 7:7, 2Co 10:10, Php 1:26 and Php 2:12. And he is speaking of himself coming to meet people, or the coming of or the physical presence of Stephanas, Fortunatus, Achaicus and Titus on different occasions.

So Paul is saying to the Thessalonians; ‘with regard to the coming' or the physical presence or “The Second Advent” of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him’. So he is not talking about some pre-tribulation event, as most people miss interpret it! Paul is talking about the real deal, when Christ physically returns and sets foot on the Mount of Olives! Then Paul continues; For that Day shall not come unless there first comes a falling away, and the man of sin shall be revealed, etc. So there is your Time Mark, and everything MUST happen BEFOR Christ returns!

Ill get back to verses 4,5 and 6. Lets continue from verse 7 “For the mystery of lawlessness is already working, only he is now holding back until it comes out of the midst. :8  And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the breath of His mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming”. So Paul is telling us that in his day the antichrist was “already working” in the background of church activity. John tells us much the same in, 1Jn 2:18 “Little children, it is the last time. And just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have risen up, from which we know that it is the last hour.” Then also in, 2Jn 1:7 “For many deceivers have entered into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the anti-christ.”

So if the antichrist, the lawless one, was already up to mischief in the time of the apostles; what was holding him back? And don’t jump to the silly conclusion, “Oh that has to be the Holy Spirit!” If Paul did mean the Holy Spirit was holding the antichrist back, then don’t you think Paul would have said that quite plainly? Example, a revamp of verse 7 above, Paul should have said in verse 7 “For the mystery of lawlessness is already working, only the Holy Spirit is now holding him back until the Holy Spirit comes out of the midst.” But Paul didn’t speak that way; he used what is called, “veiled speech”! Which hides the true meaning of his message. He was referring to the Roman Imperial Power that was “holding back” the antichrist. Once Rome fell in 476 AD, there was a power vacuum in Rome and the Pope very quickly filled it in 538 AD. For example you can go to the, “History of The Christian Church” and do a word search for “antichrist”. You will find dozens of references to the antichrist as being identified as the Pope!

Now lets go back to verses 4,5 and 6.

4 “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the templeG3485 of God, setting himself forth, that he is God. :5  Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? :6  And now you know what holds back, for him to be revealed in his own time.” In verse 5 “Do you not remember…” Paul reminds them that he had told them something secretly while he was last with them! Which must have been that when the Power of Rome is gone then the antichrist will rise up and do all these dastardly things! Which brings us to the key phrase, “that he sits as God in the templeG3485 of God, setting himself forth, that he is God!” Paul is using the key word "templeG3485”, meaning the 'body of Christ, the believers! And saying that the antichrist will rise up from within the body of Christ itself! Which is exactly what the Pope did! Refer to my talks listed below; He Shall Speak Words Against The Most High or CHURCH HISTORY Part 1 -:- [From Christ to The Pope]

Summing Up

Therefore in 2 Thess 2:4, if the word templeG3485 is NOT referring to a physical temple made of bricks and mortar, then there is no need for a physical temple to be rebuilt in Jerusalem or anywhere else! So the idea that some future antichrist will sit in some future temple is really a fantasy and has been quit misleading for centuries. The antichrist is already here and has been for centuries, and the true church, the body of Christ, has fallen away, been lead away from the truth with idolatry and false doctrine. 2 Thess 2:3 3 "Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day, (the coming of the Lord at his second advent), shall not come unless there first comes a falling away, and the man of sin shall be revealed, the son of perdition.” This verse was and has been fulfilled hundreds of years ago. It follows that if the antichrist has been here for centuries, then there is no need for a rapture to get us off the planet and away from the antichrist! So where did the idea of a future seven year tribulation come from? May I suggest you look at some of my talks listed below, in particular, When Did Jesus Become The Messiah. It will shed some light on the idea that the Seventieth Week of Daniel chapter 9 is supposedly still off in the future!

Conclusion

Paul couldn’t dear put in writing something to the effect, “When Rome falls the antichrist will rise!” It would be a death sentence to any Christian with that letter found in their possession! So he would have to speak using veiled speech. Also by using the word templeG3485 Paul is also hiding some of the meaning of his letter. Imagine you’re a Roman officer, doing a spot inspection of locales as they come and go through your checkpoint. You find a copy of this letter written by Paul to the Thessalonians. You quickly read through it, and you wouldn’t pick up on anything that seams subversive, and someone sitting in a temple calling himself God? Well that’s nothing unusual, so you would let them pass.

I hope that has given you some food for thought, and I hope you enjoyed it. Here are some of my other talks, listed below that you might find interesting: -

British Israel - David’s Royal Line Parts 1-8

Revision

In Part 1 I looked at the covenant promise to Abraham of an everlasting throne and royal line from his seed, and the Promised Land. Part 2 we saw that Israel ‘Demanded’ God to give them a king, with first Saul the ‘rotten egg', and then finally how David comes to power. Part 3 we focused on what I called ‘God’s BIG Plan’, and the promise of an everlasting family lineage of David to rule over Israel. BUT Israel will be permanently moved to a new location? Part 4 we did a quick search for scriptural conformation of the promises to David. Part 5 we looked at The Decline Of David’s Line. Part 6 we investigated why the belief in the continued royal line of David ‘Becomes A Faith Message’. Part 7 we looked at the comparison of Melchizedek and Jesus. Then searched scriptures just to see what the world knew of Jesus during the thirty-three years He was here.

Aim

We will look again at Melchizedek and Christ’s “Once and for all sacrifice”! Then search the scriptures to find out what would be the role of Jesus Christ during the millennium and into eternity. Then we will come to our conclusion.

Jesus High Priest and King

For more about Melchizedek we can go to Hebrews. Paul speaks at length all through Hebrews building a mental picture for us of the perfection of Christ and His supreme sacrifice culminating with chapter 10 “Christ's Sacrifice Once for All”. It is a lengthy read but when was the last time you read through the whole of Hebrews? Get yourself a cupper and put it on audio for 10-15 minutes.

Some highlights are, Paul speaks of the priesthood office of Aaron then shows the higher priesthood role of Christ starting in Hebrews 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Then in Hebrews 5:5 “So also Christ did not glorify Himself to be made a high priest, but He who said to Him, "You are My Son, today I have begotten You." :6 As He says also in another place, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." :7 For Jesus, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong cryings and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that He feared, :8 though being a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. :9 And being perfected, He became the Author of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him, :10 being called by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek;” Paul also makes similar comparison references of Jesus to Melchizedek in Hebrews chapter 6 through to chapter 7.

Paul speaks of the perfection required of the priesthood and that Christ has achieved that perfection. In that Christ has entered into the hole of holies in heaven itself and offered His own blood on the alter in heaven. Hebrews 10:10 “By this will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. :12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins foreversat down on the right of God, :13 from then on expecting until His enemies are made His footstool. :14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.

Therefore Christ’s role as High Priest is now finished! It is the fulfilment of Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are decreed as to your people and as to your holy city, to finish the transgression and to make an end of sins, and to make atonement for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.” As I said Christ’s role as High Priest is effectively finished or completed and it is now eternally ongoing. So lets look at His role as King!

The Eternal Kingship Of Jesus

God confirms His covenant with Christ that He would have an everlasting kingship in several passages; let’s look at a few.

Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be on His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. :7 There is no end of the increase of His government and peace on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from now on, even forever. The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts will do this.”

Isa 16:5 “And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle (or it’s the house) of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.”

Isa 22:22 “And the key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. :23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.”

Jer 23:5 “Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and act wisely, and shall do judgment and justice in the earth. :6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely. And this is His name by which He shall be called, JEHOVAH, OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jer 33:14 “Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will establish the good thing which I have spoken to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. :15 In those days, and at that time, I will cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up to David. And He shall do judgment and righteousness in the land. :16 In those days Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely. And this is the name with which she shall be called, JEHOVAH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Eze 34:22 “therefore I will save My flock, and they shall no more be a prey. And I will judge between lamb and lamb. :23 And I will set up one Shepherd over them, and He shall feed them, My servant David. He shall feed them, and He shall be their Shepherd. :24 And I Jehovah will be their God, and My servant David a ruler among them. I Jehovah have spoken.”

Jesus as King and High Priest in the Revelation

We have a couple of different lines of thought we need to address. Do we believe in the pre-tribulation rapture or do we go straight into the Second Advent? This is really important if we read Revelation chapter 20 verses 4-5 shown below! Because in verse 4 it speaks of all those who went through the Great tribulation, and they are those who are seated on thrones, and they rule and reign with Christ during the thousand years! The “CLINCHER” is, in verse 4, they are called THE FIRST RESURRECTION! So how can we have a pre-tribulation rapture; which includes the died in Christ "being raised"; and that ‘rapture’ supposedly happens some seven years before the first resurrection???? Personally, I believe we go straight into the Second Advent! I have done a few different talks on this subject if you’re interested; for example, IS There A RAPTURE? Anyway, let's look at Revelation.

We can skip through the various verses starting with revelation chapter 5, John is in the throne room of God and the Lamb receives the sealed book/scrolled. Rev 5:9 “And they sang ..You are worthy to take the book and to open its seals, for You were slain and ..redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every ..nation. :10 And You made us kings and priests to our God, and we will reign over the earth. :11 And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels ..:12 saying with a great voice, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” So Christ the ‘Lamb’ is worthy!

Rev 11:15 “And the seventh angel sounded. And there were great voices in Heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ. And He will reign forever and ever.”

Rev 12:5 “And she bore a son, a male, who is going to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne.” Then Satan was kicked out of heaven; Rev 12:10 “And I heard a great voice saying in Heaven, Now has come the salvation and power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ…”

Rev 17:14 “These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome themFor He is Lord of lords and King of kings. And those with Him are the called and elect and faithful ones.”

Rev 19:11 “And I saw Heaven opened. And behold, a white horse! And He sitting on him was called Faithful and True. And in righteousness He judges and makes war. :15 And out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, so that with it He should strike the nations. And He will shepherd them with a rod of iron. ..:16 And He has on His garment, and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

The Thousand Years Reign Of Christ

Revelation chapter 20 gives us a very clear and brief agenda as to what happens during the 1000 years. Rev 20:1 “..an angel ..having the key of the bottomless pit ..:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, ..serpent, ..the Devil, ..Satan, and bound him a thousand years, :3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, ..that he should deceive the nations no more ..till the thousand years ..be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Then the start of the millennial kingdom is established! Rev 20:4 “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. :5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. THIS IS THE FIRST RESURRECTION. :6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” During the thousand years Christ RULES with a rod if iron. The whole world must live in harmony and come to worship annually, OR pay the penalty! As in Zechariah chapter 14 verses 17-18. But after a thousand years of life without Satan meddling in thing, the thousand years is finished. Then even after a thousand years of possible plenty, people by the millions still chose to rebel and side with Satan! Then as in Rev 20:4 above, ‘Satan must be loosed a little season’. Then in only 4 verses there is a very short war and Satan is cast into the lake of fire forever and ever.

The Great White Throne

Eternity starts; Revelation 20 verses 11-15 describe this scene. But what Kingship part does Christ play in this picture? If you read through it you will find ALL, ‘great and small’ are raised and come before God the father! Rev 20:15 “And if anyone was not found having been written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of Fire.” So Jesus is your Defence Attorney with His lamb’s book of life as His Affidavit on your behalf!

Christ’s Role Into Eternity

For Christ’s role through eternity we can pick out the key phrases and list them here below then summarize at the end.

Rev 21:6 KJV “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Rev 21:9 “And one of the seven angels who had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, Come here, I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife.” [That’s us; we are Lamb’s wife]

Rev 21:22 KJV “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” [Partnership between God and the Lamb]

Rev 21:23 “And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, that they might shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated itand its lamp is the Lamb.” [Again Partnership between God and the Lamb]

Rev 22:1 “And he showed me a pure river of Water of Life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” [Again Partnership, joint rule from the same throne of God and the Lamb]

Rev 22:3 “And every curse will no longer be; but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will serve Him.” [Again, joint rule from the same throne of God and the Lamb. And we serve Him]

Rev 22:13 KJV “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Rev 22:16 KJV “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

Summing Up

You can see from that last verse that Christ brought David into existence and became the ‘offspring of David’, a full circle! Also we see that God and the Lamb, (Christ), are joint partners throughout eternity. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

It has been a lengthy study and I hope you have enjoyed it, and I am glad you have stayed with me to the end. I have tried to make it as interesting and entertaining as can be reasonable. We can see that God started with Abram, renamed him to Abraham, gave him a huge block of land and blessed him with a son and heir, Isaac. From whom God produced a nation and a company of nations. Then He established a kingdom and a royal family line, which would last for Eternity!

As Jesus has said in Revelation 21:6 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. And in Revelation 22:16 “I am the root and the offspring of David,” Jesus was involved with the whole plan from beginning to end! And with Him in charge there was NO Way the plan could fail!

Part 4 we did a quick search for scriptural conformation of the promises to David. Part 5 we looked at The Decline Of David’s Line. Part 6 we investigated why the belief in the continued royal line of David ‘Becomes A Faith Message’

Aim

I want to search through the scriptures to find any reference comparing Melchizedek and Jesus. Then a quick search of the scriptures and any prophecies referring to the time Christ was on earth, just to see what the world knew of Him during the thirty-three years He was here.

The Order of Melchizedek

Melchisedec is a very interesting bloke, as you can see his name has two different spellings, depending on what version of the bible your reading; and if you are in the Old or New Testament? For example he is ‘Melchizedek in MKJV in both Old and New Testament? He is also Melchizedek in the KJV OldT’? BUT he is Melchisedec in the KJV NewT’? And I haven’t even bothered with all the other 50 or more translations I have on eSword! So tip-toe through the bible carefully when looking for him. He is also very interesting because he first appears in Geneses chapter 14, then the apostle Paul makes reference to him in Hebrews chapters 5, 6 and 7 as a type and shadow of Christ. Let’s check him out.

Gen 14:18 “And Melchizedek the king of SalemH8004 brought forth bread and wine. And he was the priest of the most high God. :19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of Heaven and earth. :20 And blessed be the most high God, who has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he gave him tithes of all.” The key point of interest is that word Salem. From Strong’s word number, “H8004שָׁלֵםshâlêm; shaw-lame'; From Strong’s “The same as H8003; peaceful; Shalem, an early name of Jerusalem: - Salem.” So Melchizedek was BOTH king and High Priest of the most high God! Which foreshadows the role that Christ will fulfil at his Second Advent as King of this earth, and He will reign from Jerusalem, (Salem), and he is already fulfilling the role as eternal High Priest now in heaven, which we will look into later!

King And High Priest

The duel roll of both king and high priest was not uncommon in many ancient cultures. If you look up King and Priest cultures, Google will tell us of various cultures, both ancient and recent. It speaks of, ‘king-priests of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley’. You can find king-priests in Assyrian, Babylonian, Medo-Persian and in some periods of the Greek and Roman cultures. All of these cultures the Israelites and Jews were familia with. But it was never allowed or accepted in the nation of Israel. So it is interesting that there are prophesies in the bible that speak of Israel having a King-Priest in the future. Just a thought, England split from the Church of Rome? The Pope is Head of the Church of Rome? England established their King as Head of the Church of England? Well if the British Israel belief is correct, the throne of England is the throne of David? Then when Christ returns He will take that throne, correct? Which would be the fulfilment of Luke 1:32. He will then enrich or elevate the existing title of 'King and Head of the Church' to “King and High Priest! I think that is quite interesting!

Melchizedek is also mentioned in Psalm 110:1 “A Psalm of David. Jehovah said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand until I place Your enemies as Your footstool. :2 Jehovah shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion; rule in the midst of Your enemies. :3 Your people shall be willing in the day of Your power, in holy adornment from the womb of the morning: You have the dew of Your youth. :4 Jehovah has sworn, and will not repent, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. :5 The Lord at Your right hand shall strike through kings in the day of His wrath.” NB the wording at the start; ‘Jehovah said to my Lord’, or in other translations, ‘The Lord said to My Lord’. It is a classic verse that most commentaries speak of being Jehovah God speaking to Messiah Christ! Let’s check a few commentaries.

[CN from C.S. Scofield on Psalms 110:1] “(2) This Psalm announces the eternal priesthood of Messiah--one of the most important statements of Scripture (Psa 110:4).”

[CN from TSK on Psalms 110:1] “am 2962, B.C. 1042 (Title), This Psalm was probably composed by David after Nathan's prophetic address; and, from the grandeur of the subject and the sublimity of the expressions, it is evident that it can only refer, as the ancient Jews fully acknowledged, to the royal dignitypriesthood, victories, and triumphs of the MESSIAH.”

[CN from ‘The Pulpit Commentary’ on Psa 110:4] “The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent. "A fresh revelation" (Cheyne). David, admitted into the councils of the Most High, has been made aware that the Messiah is, by God’s decree, to be both King and Priest. God has "sworn" this, and will certainly not draw back from his oath. Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Not, like ordinary priests, a priest for a few years, or for a lifetime, but a priest forever and ever (לעולם)—seeing "he ever liveth to make intercession for us" (Heb 7:25). And a priest "after the order of Melchizedek." Not, that is, after the order of Aaron, who was a priest and nothing more, but after that of Melchizedek, the elder priesthood, which combined the offices of priest and king (see Heb 5:6-10; Heb 7:1-10, Heb 7:20-28).”

Prophecies Of Christ From Just The Gospels

Let’s look to see if there were any prophesies about Christ mentioned or eluded to in just the gospels. To see if they would give us a rough idea of what the world expected to see happen at that time in history. And it was world wide because the ‘wise men’ from the east picked up on something from the stares! Therefore this was external to the close nit Jewish world. So God was making His announcement world wide in the stares for all to see if they had eyes to see. What the sign in the stars was; is still to this day a subject of speculation? But it is only mentioned in Matthew, I’ll brief it down; you can look it up for details, and we will just skim through the rest of the scriptures.

Matthew 2:1 “..in the days of Herod the..wise men came ..to Jerusalem, :2 saying, Where is He who is born king of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east...”! So Herod gathers his cronies, he demanded where Christ should be born. They quoted Micah 5:2 and said in Mat 2:6 "And you, Bethlehem, in ..Judah, ..For out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule My people Israel." So the information was there in the prophets. Also there was a timeline for them in the book of Daniel chapter 9:24, the Seventy weeks! So the whole of the priesthood should have known when Christ was to appear. [Summary Christ to be King and have Rulership]

Christ’s Conception Announced

Gabriel’s Announcement: - Briefly Gabriel told Mary she is the one! Refer Luke 1:31 “..You shall conceive ..bear a son ..call His name JESUS. :32  He shall be great ..Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give Him the throne of His father David. :33  And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end." [Summary everlasting Kingship over House of Jacob/Israel from the throne of David!]

Joseph Mary’s Husband To Be:- Joseph had to be told that all was ok. Mat 1:20 “..the angel of the Lord appeared ..saying, Joseph, ..For that in her is fathered of the Holy Spirit. :21 ..you shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. :22 ..spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying, :23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb, and will bear a son. And they will call His name Emmanuel," which being interpreted is, God with us.”

[Summary Jesus is saviour also God with Us!]

Mary and Elizabeth: - In Luke 1:39-56 we have Mary and Elizabeth meeting with a joyful praise and worship time! [Summary No major prophetic announcements]

Christ’s Birth

The Shepherds In The Field: - Luke 2:11 “For to you is born today, in the city of David, a Savior, ..Christ the Lord.”

Jesus Presented At The Temple: - in Luke 2:25 “And behold ..Simeon. :27 ..he came by the Spirit into the temple ..as the parents brought in the child Jesus..:28  ..he received Him in his arms and blessed God, and said, :30  For my eyes have seen Your Salvation  :32  a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of Your people Israel. :34  And Simeon blessed ..and said to Mary ..this One is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against :35 (yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also), so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna The Prophetess: - Luk 2:36 “..a prophetess, Anna …:38 And she coming in at that instant gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him to all those in Jerusalem eagerly expecting redemption.”

[Summary Jesus the Savior, A light to the Nation, He is the glory of Israel, and of a revealing.]

So far we have some glorious things prophesied about Jesus but the key things I’m looking for are those regarding His kingship. And we have only found them in Matthew 2 and Luke 1. And except for when Jesus was 12 years old, He seemed to live a life of obscurity until His baptism at 30 years of age.

John Baptist Know and Expected To See The Messiah

Joh 1:35 “..John stood with two of his disciples. :36  And looking upon Jesus as He walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God"! So John was given the revelation as to Christ’s role! The two disciples of John followed Jesus. One of them, Andrew, went to get his brother Simon Peter and said in John 1:41 “..We have found the Messiah (which is, being translated, the Christ).”

[Summary John received revelation Jesus was the Christ and Lamb of God; and Andrew accepted that and ran with it!]

Messengers from John the Baptist

In Matthew 11, John was in prison, he sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus, ‘Are you the one or do we look for another?’

Mat 11:4 “Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John again those things which you hear and see: :5 the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel proclaimed to them.” Jesus was effectively telling John that the Messiah was to be identified by these ‘signs’! And that Jesus was fulfilling them as prophesied in Isa 29:18, Isa 30:4-6, Isa 35:4-6, Isa 61:1-2, Eze 36:1-38 and Eze 37:1-28; just to name a few!

[Summary Jesus was the fulfilment of the role of the Messiah at the right time and the right place!]

Caiaphas The High Priest’s Prophecy

This is very interesting because it shows that God can even use an evil High Priest to achieve what God wants done!

John 11:49 “And one of them, Caiaphas, being the high priest of that year, said to them, You do not know anything at all, :50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. :51 And he did not speak this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;”

In summery ‘the prophecies of Christ from just the gospels’ haven’t given me the results I was looking for, namely His role as King and High Priest? There are probably some others that I haven’t found and if you can think of some please let me know in the comments thanks so that I can update this article for you. If we can now go to Part 8; British Israel - David’s Royal Line Part 8: - The Eternal Role Of Christ, we can hunt through the scriptures see what He will be doing during the Revelation, the Millennium and through to eternity. Then I’ll give you my short conclusion to tie all eight lesions together.
