Revision

In Part 1 I looked at the covenant promise to Abraham of an everlasting throne and royal line from his seed, and the Promised Land. Part 2 we saw that Israel ‘Demanded’ God to give them a king, with first Saul the ‘rotten egg', and then finally how David comes to power. Part 3 we focused on what I called ‘God’s BIG Plan’, and the promise of an everlasting family lineage of David to rule over Israel. BUT Israel will be permanently moved to a new location? Part 4 we did a quick search for scriptural conformation of the promises to David. Part 5 we looked at The Decline Of David’s Line. Part 6 we investigated why the belief in the continued royal line of David ‘Becomes A Faith Message’

Aim

I want to search through the scriptures to find any reference comparing Melchizedek and Jesus. Then a quick search of the scriptures and any prophecies referring to the time Christ was on earth, just to see what the world knew of Him during the thirty-three years He was here.

The Order of Melchizedek

Melchisedec is a very interesting bloke, as you can see his name has two different spellings, depending on what version of the bible your reading; and if you are in the Old or New Testament? For example he is ‘Melchizedek in MKJV in both Old and New Testament? He is also Melchizedek in the KJV OldT’? BUT he is Melchisedec in the KJV NewT’? And I haven’t even bothered with all the other 50 or more translations I have on eSword! So tip-toe through the bible carefully when looking for him. He is also very interesting because he first appears in Geneses chapter 14, then the apostle Paul makes reference to him in Hebrews chapters 5, 6 and 7 as a type and shadow of Christ. Let’s check him out.

Gen 14:18 “And Melchizedek the king of SalemH8004 brought forth bread and wine. And he was the priest of the most high God. :19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of Heaven and earth. :20 And blessed be the most high God, who has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he gave him tithes of all.” The key point of interest is that word Salem. From Strong’s word number, “H8004שָׁלֵםshâlêm; shaw-lame'; From Strong’s “The same as H8003; peaceful; Shalem, an early name of Jerusalem: - Salem.” So Melchizedek was BOTH king and High Priest of the most high God! Which foreshadows the role that Christ will fulfil at his Second Advent as King of this earth, and He will reign from Jerusalem, (Salem), and he is already fulfilling the role as eternal High Priest now in heaven, which we will look into later!

King And High Priest

The duel roll of both king and high priest was not uncommon in many ancient cultures. If you look up King and Priest cultures, Google will tell us of various cultures, both ancient and recent. It speaks of, ‘king-priests of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley’. You can find king-priests in Assyrian, Babylonian, Medo-Persian and in some periods of the Greek and Roman cultures. All of these cultures the Israelites and Jews were familia with. But it was never allowed or accepted in the nation of Israel. So it is interesting that there are prophesies in the bible that speak of Israel having a King-Priest in the future. Just a thought, England split from the Church of Rome? The Pope is Head of the Church of Rome? England established their King as Head of the Church of England? Well if the British Israel belief is correct, the throne of England is the throne of David? Then when Christ returns He will take that throne, correct? Which would be the fulfilment of Luke 1:32. He will then enrich or elevate the existing title of 'King and Head of the Church' to “King and High Priest! I think that is quite interesting!

Melchizedek is also mentioned in Psalm 110:1 “A Psalm of David. Jehovah said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand until I place Your enemies as Your footstool. :2 Jehovah shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion; rule in the midst of Your enemies. :3 Your people shall be willing in the day of Your power, in holy adornment from the womb of the morning: You have the dew of Your youth. :4 Jehovah has sworn, and will not repent, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. :5 The Lord at Your right hand shall strike through kings in the day of His wrath.” NB the wording at the start; ‘Jehovah said to my Lord’, or in other translations, ‘The Lord said to My Lord’. It is a classic verse that most commentaries speak of being Jehovah God speaking to Messiah Christ! Let’s check a few commentaries.

[CN from C.S. Scofield on Psalms 110:1] “(2) This Psalm announces the eternal priesthood of Messiah--one of the most important statements of Scripture (Psa 110:4).”

[CN from TSK on Psalms 110:1] “am 2962, B.C. 1042 (Title), This Psalm was probably composed by David after Nathan's prophetic address; and, from the grandeur of the subject and the sublimity of the expressions, it is evident that it can only refer, as the ancient Jews fully acknowledged, to the royal dignitypriesthood, victories, and triumphs of the MESSIAH.”

[CN from ‘The Pulpit Commentary’ on Psa 110:4] “The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent. "A fresh revelation" (Cheyne). David, admitted into the councils of the Most High, has been made aware that the Messiah is, by God’s decree, to be both King and Priest. God has "sworn" this, and will certainly not draw back from his oath. Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Not, like ordinary priests, a priest for a few years, or for a lifetime, but a priest forever and ever (לעולם)—seeing "he ever liveth to make intercession for us" (Heb 7:25). And a priest "after the order of Melchizedek." Not, that is, after the order of Aaron, who was a priest and nothing more, but after that of Melchizedek, the elder priesthood, which combined the offices of priest and king (see Heb 5:6-10; Heb 7:1-10, Heb 7:20-28).”

Prophecies Of Christ From Just The Gospels

Let’s look to see if there were any prophesies about Christ mentioned or eluded to in just the gospels. To see if they would give us a rough idea of what the world expected to see happen at that time in history. And it was world wide because the ‘wise men’ from the east picked up on something from the stares! Therefore this was external to the close nit Jewish world. So God was making His announcement world wide in the stares for all to see if they had eyes to see. What the sign in the stars was; is still to this day a subject of speculation? But it is only mentioned in Matthew, I’ll brief it down; you can look it up for details, and we will just skim through the rest of the scriptures.

Matthew 2:1 “..in the days of Herod the..wise men came ..to Jerusalem, :2 saying, Where is He who is born king of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east...”! So Herod gathers his cronies, he demanded where Christ should be born. They quoted Micah 5:2 and said in Mat 2:6 "And you, Bethlehem, in ..Judah, ..For out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule My people Israel." So the information was there in the prophets. Also there was a timeline for them in the book of Daniel chapter 9:24, the Seventy weeks! So the whole of the priesthood should have known when Christ was to appear. [Summary Christ to be King and have Rulership]

Christ’s Conception Announced

Gabriel’s Announcement: - Briefly Gabriel told Mary she is the one! Refer Luke 1:31 “..You shall conceive ..bear a son ..call His name JESUS. :32  He shall be great ..Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give Him the throne of His father David. :33  And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end." [Summary everlasting Kingship over House of Jacob/Israel from the throne of David!]

Joseph Mary’s Husband To Be:- Joseph had to be told that all was ok. Mat 1:20 “..the angel of the Lord appeared ..saying, Joseph, ..For that in her is fathered of the Holy Spirit. :21 ..you shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. :22 ..spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying, :23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb, and will bear a son. And they will call His name Emmanuel," which being interpreted is, God with us.”

[Summary Jesus is saviour also God with Us!]

Mary and Elizabeth: - In Luke 1:39-56 we have Mary and Elizabeth meeting with a joyful praise and worship time! [Summary No major prophetic announcements]

Christ’s Birth

The Shepherds In The Field: - Luke 2:11 “For to you is born today, in the city of David, a Savior, ..Christ the Lord.”

Jesus Presented At The Temple: - in Luke 2:25 “And behold ..Simeon. :27 ..he came by the Spirit into the temple ..as the parents brought in the child Jesus..:28  ..he received Him in his arms and blessed God, and said, :30  For my eyes have seen Your Salvation  :32  a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of Your people Israel. :34  And Simeon blessed ..and said to Mary ..this One is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against :35 (yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also), so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna The Prophetess: - Luk 2:36 “..a prophetess, Anna …:38 And she coming in at that instant gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him to all those in Jerusalem eagerly expecting redemption.”

[Summary Jesus the Savior, A light to the Nation, He is the glory of Israel, and of a revealing.]

So far we have some glorious things prophesied about Jesus but the key things I’m looking for are those regarding His kingship. And we have only found them in Matthew 2 and Luke 1. And except for when Jesus was 12 years old, He seemed to live a life of obscurity until His baptism at 30 years of age.

John Baptist Know and Expected To See The Messiah

Joh 1:35 “..John stood with two of his disciples. :36  And looking upon Jesus as He walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God"! So John was given the revelation as to Christ’s role! The two disciples of John followed Jesus. One of them, Andrew, went to get his brother Simon Peter and said in John 1:41 “..We have found the Messiah (which is, being translated, the Christ).”

[Summary John received revelation Jesus was the Christ and Lamb of God; and Andrew accepted that and ran with it!]

Messengers from John the Baptist

In Matthew 11, John was in prison, he sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus, ‘Are you the one or do we look for another?’

Mat 11:4 “Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John again those things which you hear and see: :5 the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel proclaimed to them.” Jesus was effectively telling John that the Messiah was to be identified by these ‘signs’! And that Jesus was fulfilling them as prophesied in Isa 29:18, Isa 30:4-6, Isa 35:4-6, Isa 61:1-2, Eze 36:1-38 and Eze 37:1-28; just to name a few!

[Summary Jesus was the fulfilment of the role of the Messiah at the right time and the right place!]

Caiaphas The High Priest’s Prophecy

This is very interesting because it shows that God can even use an evil High Priest to achieve what God wants done!

John 11:49 “And one of them, Caiaphas, being the high priest of that year, said to them, You do not know anything at all, :50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. :51 And he did not speak this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;”

In summery ‘the prophecies of Christ from just the gospels’ haven’t given me the results I was looking for, namely His role as King and High Priest? There are probably some others that I haven’t found and if you can think of some please let me know in the comments thanks so that I can update this article for you. If we can now go to Part 8; British Israel - David’s Royal Line Part 8: - The Eternal Role Of Christ, we can hunt through the scriptures see what He will be doing during the Revelation, the Millennium and through to eternity. Then I’ll give you my short conclusion to tie all eight lesions together.
