Revision

In Part 1 I looked at the covenant promise to Abraham of an everlasting throne and royal line from his seed, and the Promised Land. Part 2 we saw that Israel ‘Demanded’ God to give them a king, with first Saul the ‘rotten egg', and then finally how David comes to power. Part 3 we focused on what I called ‘God’s BIG Plan’, and the promise of an everlasting family lineage of David to rule over Israel. BUT Israel will be permanently moved to a new location? Part 4 we did a quick search for scriptural conformation of the promises to David.

Aim

I want to look at the slow down fall of David’s family line. And try to answer the age-old argument “But the throne of David Doesn’t exist ANY MORE!”

The Decline Of David’s Line

I have put these passages in just to show that God would correct the royal line of David if they ‘stepped over the mark’. As God said above in 2Sa 7:14 “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men.” Here is just a hand full of times when God stepped in! You can go to these verses yourself and look at the history and the lead up to the downfall of David’s throne.

2Sa 12:7 “And Nathan said to David, You are the man! So says Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.:13 And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said to David, Jehovah also has put away your sin; you shall not die.:15 And Nathan left to go to his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick.” Eventually the child died.

Jer 22:30 “So says Jehovah, Write this man down as childless, a man who will not be blessed in his days. For no man of his seed shall be blessed, sitting on the throne of David and ruling any more in Judah.”

Jer 29:16 “so says Jehovah of the king who sits on the throne of David, and of all the people who dwell in this city, and of your brothers who have not gone out with you into captivity; :17 so says Jehovah of Hosts: Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the plague, and will make them like worthless figs which cannot be eaten from badness.”

Jer 36:30 “Therefore so says Jehovah of Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David. And his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.”

There are many more like these, ‘Write this man down as childless”? God severs the family line and transfers the throne to another member of the royal line of David, because the corruption of the reigning king has finally become intolerable! Ultimately we know from biblical history that Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians. The temple was destroyed, which we know from history! At the same time in history, the family line of David was ended! (Or most think that is so!). Let’s look at some scriptures.

The Last Davidic King in Jerusalem

It happened in 686 BC. From a timeline point of view you can go to, e-Sword/Graphics Viewer/Timelines/Chart 14: 690 570BC. The right half of the chart has a wealth of information. It shows the three groups carried away to Babylon, the dates and the last male line of David, King Zedekiah. Also the chart shows the group that took Jeremiah and fled to Egypt. Let’s read some scriptures about all that.

Jeremiah 52:5 “So the city was under attack until the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. :6 And in the fourth month, in the ninth of the month, the famine was very grievous in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. :7 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden. (And the Chaldeans lay around the city all around.) And they went by the way of the plain. :8 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And all his army was scattered from him. :9 And they took the king and carried him up to the king of Babylon, to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgments against him. :10 And the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. He also killed all the rulers of Judah in Riblah. :11 And he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah. And the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death.”

Well the last king on the throne of David is dead! And all his sons where put to death in front of him, then he was carried away and died in prison! Therefore most people say surly the line of David is finished? No because there is still a family line on the bases of an OLD Mosaic Law found in the book of Numbers chapter 27. So who is the heir to the throne?

Jer 43:4 “So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the forces, and all the people, did not obey the voice of Jehovah to live in the land of Judah. :5 But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations (where they had been driven) to dwell in the land of Judah; :6 men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the chief of the executioners had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophetand Baruch the son of Neriah. :7 So they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of JehovahORD. So they came to Tahpanhes.” [NB: - “JehovahORD”?? ..that must be a funny ‘TyPo’ in eSword]

So, the king's daughters were still alive and were carried off to Egypt along with Jeremiah and Baruch, Baruch was Jeremiah scribe. And you can be quite sure that Jeremiah would know how to maintain the royal line of David if there was a legitimate way for it to come about. After all we know from 2 Kings chapter 11 that queen Athaliah ruled in Israel for some years until she got the cop! So a Queen on the throne was legitimate. And if Jeremiah didn’t know some legal loophole, then I’m sure God would have told him how to solve the problem. But there already was an OLD Mosaic Law that perfectly suited the situation! It cropped up because of a situation back before Israel entered the Promised Land. You can refer to Numbers chapter 27 and have a read.

The short story is a bloke by the name of Zelophehad died during the 40 years in the wilderness. He hand no sons but five daughters. These girls fronted up to Moses and others and presented their case! Verse 4 “Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he has no son? Therefore give us a possession among the brothers of our father. :5 “And Moses brought their cause before Jehovah. :6 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, :7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers. …:8 And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, When a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. etc. etc.” We have a classic case of Probate here! The King is dead; and there are no surviving sons! Who inherits “the estate”? The Kings daughter! If that’s the case then what happened to the Kings daughter?

What Happened To The Throne Of David?

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard this sort of phrase; “The Throne Of David Doesn’t Exist Any More!” If people say that, with all those promises to David’s family line listed above; then they must be really “GAME” people! Because they are virtually saying, “God is a Liar!” Or “God is impotent and can’t achieve what He says He’s going to do!” Or they think God is stupid and He sends out His angels with stupid instruction, like when He sent Gabriel to Mary to tell her she is going to give birth to the Christ. And Gabriel said in, Luke 1:32 “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:” Then those scoffers laugh and say, “BUT The Throne Of David Doesn’t Exist Any More!” Those sorts of people are about as smart as Ananias and Sapphira of Acts chapter 5.

At this point we have to switch over to “legions”. I know what you are thinking; “WHAT! Legions? I thought this was a bible study?” Well we do know that Nebuchadnezzar with his army came to Egypt and destroyed it. Jer 43:8-13. And in all of that passage, there is no written record of Jeremiah, Baruch or the king's daughters, so what happened to them? Well to answer that question, let’s go to Part 6; British Israel - David’s Royal Line Part 6: - British Israel Becomes A Faith Message

Revision

In Part 1 I looked at the covenant promise to Abraham of an everlasting throne and royal line from his seed, and the Promised Land. Part 2 we saw that Israel demanded God to give them a king, with first Saul the ‘rotten egg', and then finally David comes to power. Part 3 we focused on what I called ‘God’s BIG Plan’, and the promise of an everlasting family lineage of David to rule over Israel. BUT Israel will be permanently moved to a new location?

Aim

In Part 4 I would like to search through the scriptures to see if we can find Confirmation from God through the prophets that He has given ample proof that the promises to David have been maintained and confirmed in scripture.

Confirmation

Remember Jesus said in Matt 18:16 “…that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.” That statement is also in Deu 17:6, Deu 19:15, 2Co 13:1, 1Ti 5:19 and Heb 10:28. So according to scripture, we are entitled to demand proof of this staggering promise to David, which is in both 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17. And God does give us ample proof in several scriptures. Let’s look for them. Here are 15 passages that I have found, there are probably many more. I found them by doing a word search using words like; “throne, forever, David, Israel” and combinations of them. You can look them up at you leisure to get the full picture as to why some of them came about. I have tried to shorten most of them to one line, but you will still get the drift.

1Ch 22:10 “And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever

1Ki 2:33 but upon David, and upon his seed, …his house, …his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

1Ki 2:45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.

2Ch 6:16 Your servant David …There shall not fail you a man in My sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only…

2Ch 7:18 I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.

2Ch 13:5 the God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt

2Ch 21:7 ..covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.

Psa 89:3 I have sworn to David My servant ..Your seed will I establish forever ..build up your throne to all generations.

Psa 132:11 Jehovah has sworn to David in truth; ..Of the fruit of your body I will set on the throne for you.

Psa 132:12 If your sons will keep My covenant and My testimonies …their sons shall also sit on your throne forever

Jer 33:17 For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

Jer 33:20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;:21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

Jer 33:25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; :26 then I will cast away the seed of Jacob, and David My servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will bring back their captivity, and have mercy on them.

As I said there are probably a lot more verses that you could think of. But we wanted the conformation with, “two or three witnesses” or more! These passages above pretty well confirm the amazing promises to David in 2 Samuel 7. But thousands of people scoff at these ideas: -

·         That there MUST still be a descendant of David in existence somewhere in the world
·         That there MUST still be the throne of David still in existence somewhere in the world

Well you have a few options??

1.    All of these prophecies came through the prophets of Israel so the prophets were bias and they Curried Favour.
2.    The prophets were correct but God has changed His mined and or gone back on His Word? WHAT! I don't think so!
3.  Neither of those seems right! SO there must STILL be a descendant of David currently on David’s throne somewhere!

Question Time

There are obviously enough scripture to support the promises to David. We can search for more scriptures if you like. I have left some time here for open Q & A. Are there any questions?

Revision

In Part 1 I looked at the covenant promise to Abraham of an everlasting throne and royal line from his seed, and the Promised Land. Part 2 we saw that Israel demanded of God to give them a king, with first Saul the ‘rotten egg', and then finally David comes to power.

Aim

In Part 3 I want to focus on what I called ‘God’s BIG Plan’. Then look at the promise of an everlasting kingdom and an everlasting descendant of David to rule on that kingdom.

God’s Chat With David

David had his ups and downs but God pulled him through it all until David had no more enemies to subdue, he’s bored! So he came up with this bright idea to build a temple for the Lord. This whole chapter in 2 Samuel chapter 7 could be likened to a visionary door opening for David. God opens up to David the ‘Long Term BIG PLAN’ that He has for Both Israel the nation and for David’s family line. The same account of this is recorded in 1Ch 17 almost word for word, so that constitutes being on recorded twice.

How did it start?

2Sa 7:1 “And it happened when the king dwelt in his house, and when Jehovah had given him rest round about from all his enemies, :2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I live in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains. :3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart, for Jehovah is with you.”

God Asks ‘Have I Ever Needed A Temple?

2Sa 7:4 “And that night the Word of Jehovah came to Nathan saying, :5 Go and tell My servant David, So says Jehovah, Shall you build Me a house for My dwelling? :6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the sons of Israel out of Egypt until this day, but have walked in a tent, even in a tabernacle. :7 In all places in which I have walked with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the tribes of Israel, those I commanded to feed My people Israel, saying, Why do you not build Me a house of cedars?”

God Told David ‘I Have Been Watching You’

2Sa 7:8 “And now so shall you say to My servant David, So says Jehovah of Hosts: I took you from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. :9 And I was with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies out of your sight, and have made you a great name like the name of the great ones in the earth.”

God’s Future Plan For The Nation

Now this is really quite weird, and most people NEVER really catch onto it, or fully understand it! Look at it from David’s point of view: He is king over ALL Israel; And Israel is IN “The Promised Land”; And every kingdom around about his kingdom are paying him tribute! Then God says He is going to move Israel and they will NEVER come back to this location? Read this a few time until that sinks in!

2Sa 7:10 “And I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their ownand move no more. Neither shall the sons of wickedness afflict them any more, as before.” Let’s put that into some simple plain language. What is God actually saying? “I will appoint a place for My people Israel”, aren’t they already in the promised land? Now God is saying He has another place for His people Israel. “and will plant them”, so God is the one who is going to plant them in this new locationThat they may dwell in a place of their own? A new land that they can call their own land! “And move no more”? So they will NEVER come back to the land of Israel?

God’s BIG PLAN For David

David’s Eternal House, (i.e., Family Line), And The Eternal Throne. Take note of verse 14! Most people skim over all of this chapter and say, “yes but this is all talking about Christ and His eternal throne!” BUT verse 14 clearly cannot be referring to Christ! “If he commits iniquity”?? This is God telling David, in verse 16, that David’s family lineage, his kingdom and his throne will be ETERNAL! Even if they are godless, idolatress, murders or what ever; because of His unwavering promise to David, God would chastise them if needed, but He would still pull them through in the end!

2Sa 7:11 “And even from the time that I commanded judges to be over My people of Israel, so will I cause you to rest from all your enemies. Also Jehovah tells you that He will make you a house. :12 And when your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall come out of your bowels. And I will make his kingdom sure. :13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. :14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men. :15 But My mercy shall not leave him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you. :16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before youYour throne shall be established forever. :17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer of Gratitude

Now look at how David understood and gratefully and humbly responded to what God has just told him. Nine times David acknowledges God is speaking of his family line and eternally blessing his family line. Also verses 22 to 24 David acknowledges the eternal blessing on the nation of Israel!

2Sa 7:18 Then King David went in and sat before Jehovah. And he said, Who am I, O Lord Jehovah? And what is my house, that You have brought me here? :19 And this was yet a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God. But You have spoken also of Your servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of men, O Lord God? :20 And what can David say more to You? For You, O Lord Jehovah, know Your servant. :21 For Your Word's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things to make Your servant know. :22 Therefore You are great, O Jehovah God. For there is none like You, neither is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. :23 And what one nation in the earth is like Your people, like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to Himself, and to make Him a name, and to do for You great things and terrible, for Your land, before Your people, whom You redeemed to You from Egypt, from the nations and their gods? :24 For You have confirmed to Yourself Your people Israel to be a people to You forever. And You, Jehovah, have become their God. :25 And now, O Jehovah God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant, and concerning his house: establish it forever, and do as You have said. :26 And let Your name be magnified forever, saying, The Jehovah of Hosts is the God over Israel. And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. :27 For You, O Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed to Your servant, saying, I will build you a house. Therefore Your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to You. :28 And now, O Lord Jehovah, You are that God, and Your Words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. :29 Therefore, now, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, to be forever before You. For You, O Lord Jehovah, have spoken. And with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever

Miscommunication?

It is only natural that we wonder wether or not Nathan correctly conveyed the message from the Lord, or perhaps did David misunderstand what Nathan said! Well let me tell a bit of Apostolic Church history from back around the 1920’s/30’s. My father grow up in the Apostolic Church, his father was a pillar in the church and an intercessor in the 1930’s and 40’s. The Apostolic Church in those days believed and operated in ‘the five-fold’ ministry, as in Ephesians 4:11-12. That is they functioned under the guidance of apostles, prophets, pasters, teachers and evangelists. Dad told me how the prophetic ministry worked in those days, and remember they only had ‘shorthand’, and no recording equipment. If the prophet spoke, then the message was taken down in shorthand. It was inturn typed up and a copy was posted off to The Apostolic Church World Headquarters Penygroes Wales. They would then compile all the prophecies and send a monthly copy out to all the Apostolic Churches worldwide. Each little church could then see that the Holy Spirit had given the same message, at the same time, to numerous Apostolic Churches in various countries around the world. There is your confirmation, “Throw the mouth of two or three witnesses!”

I also heard through two different sources, this story, that same sort of thing happened to a mufti. Jesus spoke to him in a dream or vision and told him words to this effect. “You are not speaking correctly about Me. Go to surah and surah and surah, then tell the people about Me!” The mufti sat on that massage for a short time until the Holy Spirit must have pushed him harder? Eventually the mufti told his people what he received. Amazingly about 28 muftis in that region all spoke the same massage that same day.

Charlie and The Penguin!

At this point I like to tell a cute little Joke about ‘Charlie and The Penguin!’ And I’ve heard that business-training groups use this as a lesson on communication skills.

Charlie and the Penguin

Charlie was the town drunk and he would often fall asleep on Saint Kilda beach Melbourne. He woke up one morning with a tiny Penguin that had crawled up under his jacket. Still hung over he said to the Penguin; “You look lost! I’ll take you to the Police station, they’re good friends of mine, they’ll know what to do with you!” So he tucks the Penguin under his arm and totters off to the Police station, and stands at the reception bench, happily tinkling the bell'.

Out comes Constable Collins and asks, “What have you found today Charlie?” Charlie answers proudly, “I have found a Penguin!!” Collins grins and says, “Well done Charlie, why don’t you take the Penguin to the Zoo?” Charlie delightedly replies, “Yeah! Great idea HOO ROO!” So Charlie wanders of to the Zoo with the Penguin under his arm.

Well that was about 10 am. And by about 4 pm. Collins has finished his shift and while driving home, he spots Charlie 6 hours later, wandering down the street with the Penguin still under his arm. Collins pulls over and calls out, “Charlie!” Charlie turns and says, “Oh ..high Osifher!” Collins exclaims “I thought I told you to take the Penguin to the Zoo!!”

Charlie with a big grin proudly answered, “I did; and tomorrow we’re going to the Movies!”

Did David Understand The Message Correctly?

Now put this Penguin joke in the context of David’s response to God! David answers God, quit clearly understanding God means that his family line will last FOR EVER! Lots of wonderful Christians claim that this whole passage refers to Christ.

Firstly: - As I said above the passage says, “If he commits iniquity….”; So, that CAN NOT be talking about Jesus!

Secondly: - If God did mean it would only be fulfilled through Jesus; then don’t you think God would have had the courtesy to explain things better to David? But NO God’s message to David was clear and sold, no questions asked!

Revision

In Part 1 we looked at the covenant promise through Abraham and Isaac of a king, on an earthly throne, to rule over this everlasting kingdom! With the land of Canaan and the title deed, being the circumcision!

Aim

In Part 2 we look at what lead up to Israel wanting a king and what God thought of the issue. Then a very brief look at how David came into the picture

A King For Israel!

Just imagine it is 1049 BC and you see all this stuff on your ‘internet’, on your ‘stone tablet' and your hearing it from your Wi-Fe! Cause she is telling you all this gossip! ‘We want a king to rule over us like other kingdoms have’; ‘Samuel find us a king!’ ‘A king for Israel!’ ‘Please give a Thumbs-Up if you agree and want a king!’ Ha Ha! But it was typical election lobbying, refer 1 Samuel 8:4-6. The short story is that Samuel got reluctantly dragged into the selection process, but God told him to tell the people “The Privilege Of The King”

Samuel's Warning Against Kings

1Sa 8:10 “And Samuel told all the Words of Jehovah to the people who asked a king of him. :11 And he said, This will be the privilege of the king who shall reign over you. He shall take your sons and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and his horsemen. And they shall run before his chariots. :12 And he will appoint commanders over thousands, and commanders over fifties, and some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and make his weapons of war and weapons for his chariots. :13 And he will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. :14 And he will take your fields and your vineyards and your olive-yards, the best, and give them to his servants. :15 And he will take the tenth of your seed and of your vineyards, and give it to his eunuchs and to his servants. :16 And he will take your male slaves and your slave girls, and your finest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. :17 He will take the tenth of your sheep, and you shall be his servants. :18 And you shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.”

In other words God said; “IS THIS WHAT REALLY YOU WANT!” And the elders of Israel still said YES! 1Sa 8:19. Ultimately Saul was chosen to be king over Israel and if you go to 1Samuel 10:19-21, it seemed like Samuel used some guidance from the Lord for a selection process, perhaps ‘Urim and Thummim’, the bible doesn’t say. Finally by God's leading Saul was chosen to be King of Israel. So you would think Saul would have turned out to be good value for Israel wouldn’t you? 1Sa 11:6 “And the Spirit of God came powerfully on Saul when he heard those words,” that Jabesh-gilead was under siege. But only two chapters later in 1 Samuel chapter 13, Saul did the wrong thing. Saul was told to wait until Samuel arrived to make the sacrifice. But no Saul jumped the gun and did the sacrifice himself. In verses 13 and 14 Samuel tells Saul his kingdom is finished and that God has told Samuel there is someone else who will take the throne of Israel. From then on Saul just continued making mistakes. And later when Samuel went to find David it was obvious that Saul was watching Samuels’s actions.

Check your bible to see if it has main headings. Just by skimming through the headings you can see the demise of Saul’s reign over Israel. Just look at these headings given in italics for example: - 1Sa 12 Samuel's Farewell Address, (Samuel goes into retirement). 1Sa 13 Saul Fights the Philistines, Saul's Unlawful Sacrifice. 1Sa 14 Jonathan Defeats the Philistines, (but he eats some honey). Saul's Rash Vow, (any one who eat will be put to death!). Saul Fights Israel's Enemies, 1Sa 15 The Lord Rejects Saul! 1Sa 16 David Anointed King(God choses a man after His own heart!). David in Saul's Service, (David is brought in to play the harp to sooth Saul from the evil spirit sent by God!). Finally; 1Sa 17 David and Goliath. Eventually David becomes a member of Saul’s entourage and gains the favour of ALL and the jealousy of Saul! 1Sa 28:7 Finally Saul got involved with witchcraft before a final big battle in which he and his son were killed.

During Saul’s reign God sent Samuel off on a covert mission to select another king for Israel, refer 1 Samuel 16. God sent him to Bethlehem, ‘find a bloke by the name of Jesse and one of his sons is the one I’ve chosen’. So Samuel gets to Jesses‘ house, on some pretext he is there just to do something else. (Because Saul already has wind of the idea Samuel is looking for a replacement king!) And when Samuel gets there to pick one of Jesses’ boys: the lad is not even there! He is some stripling of a kid name David, and he’s out looking after the sheep. So even Jesse didn’t consider presenting him before Samuel to be chosen! But David got anointed and from then on things all paned out according to ‘God’s BIG PLAN’ for the start of an everlasting royal family line. But not without some major hiccups; Saul often tried to have David killed or try to kill him himself. All great skull doggery reading! But when David did become king, he had to face a couple of civil wars, along with wars against Israel’s’ enemies. But all through those trying times the one big difference between Saul and David is that David most often sought the Lord as to what to do, his Psalms are full of him enquiring of the Lord.

You can do your own study of King David’s reign; most of it is outlined in the second book of Samuel. The book of 1 Kings has the final years of David and the, ‘back-stabbing’ lead up to the Anointing of King Solomon. Then I find it interesting that in closing David’s reign, David gives Solomon a ‘Hit List’ in 1 Kings chapter 2. But let’s back up the story line a few years to where God had a chat with David. In part 3; British Israel - David’s Royal Line Part 3 - God Tells David His Long-Term BIG PLAN and see what God tells David about His ‘BIG Plan' for both Israel and David's eternal family line.

Aim

In this lesson I would like to look into the origin of the throne of David, in other words it’s first mention.

Introduction

In my humble opinion, I believe there are 6 Basic messages in the bible. (If you can think of more drop me a line in the comments). But these messages tend to go "hand in glove" and seem to be inter-related or inter-dependant! For example, you can't have a kingdom unless you have land over which your kingdom can spread! You can’t have a king on a throne, without a kingdom and people over which he can govern! Anyway that’s food for thought; here is my basic list of bible messages: -

The Salvation Message: That is the gospel message of salvation to the individual.
The Message to the Church: Its Conduct and Gifts, most often explained in Paul's epistles.
The Kingdom Message: That is ‘The Kingdom that is Not of this World', and your authority in Christ.
The Throne of David Message: The Eternal Promise to David and his family line, culminating with Christ.
The House of Israel Message: Their Worldly Inheritance and their role as God’s clean up force, refer Jer 51:19-23
The House of Judah Message: They are the Custodians of The Word of God.

King In Israel, ‘FIRST Mentioned’

Stretch you memory a bit, where can you recall the first mention that there would be a king in Israel? When you think about it, God is The King of the universe on His Glorious Throne in heaven; we know this from all the visions described by the prophets. Also the things in heaven are usually foreshadowed on earth. For example God tells Moses to build a tabernacle, the type and shadow of the temple, that he was shown in heaven. Exo 25:8-9 “According to all that I show you, the pattern of the tabernacle". And all through the Revelation there are references to ‘the temple ‘ in heaven. So it was not really mans idea to have a king to rule over them in Israel. God already hand that plan up his sleave. So where do you think the first mention of a king appeared? Would you believe it goes back as far as Abram in Geneses chapter 17?

Kings Through Abraham

Gen 17: 4 “As for Me, behold! My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. [There is the starting point for ‘A Kingdom’ over many nations!] :5 Neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham. For I have made you a father of many nations. :6 And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, greatly so, and I will make nations of youand kings shall come out of you. :7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your seed after you.”

This is telling us that it was God’s plan that the kingdom is going to be everlasting! Also if we go to 1 Samuel chapter 8 where the prophet Samuel was asked by the leaders of Israel to choose a king to lead them, and Samuel was reluctant to have any part in the idea. Read verse 7 “And Jehovah said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.” So God knows the begging from the end, or visa versa. Therefore it is clear in the verse above, in Geneses 17:6, that God had already planed to have a king, on an earthly throne, to rule over this everlasting kingdom!

Kings Through Sarah [Isaac's Birth Promised]

Skip down to: - Gen 17:15 where God renamed Sarah, then verse 16 “And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nationskings of people shall be from her. :17 And Abraham fell upon his face and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear? :18 And Abraham said to God, Oh that Ishmael might live before You! :19 And God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed. And you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him." So here we have from Sarah, she had only one child Isaac, and he would be the progenitor of an everlasting kingly line!

This bit in Geneses 17, where Abraham laughed, I think it shows the wonderful relationship between God and Abraham. Refer Isa 41:8 "But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, My friend". But in the next chapter when Sarah laughed, Gen 18:12 “Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, …:13 And Jehovah said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh….? :15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh; for she was afraid. And He said, No, but you did laugh.”

Other Kingly Lines?

Back it up a bit, Kings will come through Abraham!? You have Ishmael to think about with possible kingly lines. BUT don’t forget that Abraham later took a second wife after Sarah died. So do kings continue through his second wife as according to Geneses 17 verse 6 above? Refer: - Gen 25:1 “Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. :2 And she bore him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. :3 And Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. :4 And the sons of Midian: Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah. :5 And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. :6 But to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts. And he sent them away from Isaac his son while he still lived, eastward to the east country.” So we have seven more sons through Abraham, Ishmael plus six through Keturah. For them you can do your own study to see if ‘Kings’ came up through them. But the key issue is that God said, “you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him!" And we know that the royal line of David came down through Isaac.

The Land

You can’t have a kingdom without a land! Gen 17:8 “And I will give the land to you in which you are a stranger, and to your seed after youall the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. And I will be their God. :9 And God said to Abraham, And you shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you in their generations.” Then God goes on to describe the covenant of circumcision. BUT what was The area in sq km of the ancient land of Canaan? Well Google tells me; “The area of the ancient Land of Canaan was approximately 6,600 to 8,000 square miles (around 17,000 to 20,000 sq km) for the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea." Which was a HUGE sized property for God to give to an old bloke like Abraham who just turned a hundred. In comparison the biggest cattle station in Australia is the Anna Creek Station, and it covers approximately 23,677 square kilometres. Therefore Canaan is about 80% the size of Anna Creek Station! But these days we have helicopters and 4X4’s to round up cattle. In Old Abraham’s day it was all done on foot! And being such a huge area for Abraham, it’s no wonder that he said to his nephew Lot, “You take half and I’ll take the other half”, Genesis 13:9.

The Covenant [The Title Deed!]

This is very interesting because it indicates who can be a part of this land of Israel, and they DO NOT need to have any bloodline link to the line of Abraham. Gen 17:10 “This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your seed after you. Every male child among you shall be circumcised. :11 And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin. And it shall be token of the covenant between Me and you. :12 And a son of eight days shall be circumcised among you, every male child in your generations; he that is born in the house, or bought with silver of any stranger who is not of your seed. :13 He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with your silver, must be circumcised. And My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. :14 And the uncircumcised male child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” WOW!

Let’s go to Part 2; British Israel - David’s Royal Line Part 2: - Israel DEMANDS A King! In that lesson see how Israel ‘Demanded' a king from God, and the ups and downs of the kingdom through to the ascension of David to the throne.
